Beyonce is bouncing all over
Just in time for the release of her latest album “B-Day,” Beyonce is all over the place, literally: last week, the MTV Video Awards in New York, this week concerts in Japan.
On 29 September, B is putting on her fashion designer hat for a trip to The Windy City. W reports that she and “momanager” Tina will be honorary chairs for Macy’s Glamorama at the Chicago Theatre. Not only will Beyonce perform a benefit concert for the Art Institute of Chicago, she’ll also debut her (and mom’s) clothing label, House of Dereon, on the runway. The mag quotes Tina as saying that “there would be something wrong with me if I wasn’t a little nervous.” For tickets, go to the Chicago Theatre’s site.
I checked out the selection on the House of Dereon website. Hmmm…uh…yikes. It’s not exactly my style, but if you’re into shiny, tight-fitting items, you’ll jump for joy.

I think Beyonce is a great talent as a recording artist and performer. I applaud her efforts and her success. However, I do not think House of Dereon is worth of a debut at the Art Institute of Chicago. There is nothing couture, artistic or creative about the House of Dereon line. Let me be totally honest. It is not up to “par”. $148 shirts, $198 jeans… overpriced, highly marked up pieces of a RTW line. It’s Baby Phat with a different edge. As a native Chicagoan, I’m surprise that the Art Institute of Chicago has fallen into the commercialism vortex - as such. Moreso, I think having a rep. from House of Dereon as the honorary chairs of the Macy’s Glamorama has set the tone for Macy’s in Chicago… It will never be or live up to the demure sophistication of Marshall Field’s (on State Street). There full blown plunge into the “pop pool” of society is a tell-tale sign that Macy’s are not for the true fashionista(s) of this world. –I could be wrong.
